Counselling services for adults who have experienced sexual violence.

Healing from sexual violence is a deeply personal journey, and at Saffron Centre, we are here to walk alongside you. Our trauma-informed adult counselling services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of all adults who have experienced sexual violence, offering a safe space to explore, understand, and heal. Whether your experience is recent or happened in the past, our compassionate team provides a range of therapeutic options designed to encourage you, build your resilience, and help you reclaim your life. Through individualized and group programs, available in-person or virtually, we are committed to supporting your unique path to healing.

Adult Counselling

Our adult counselling services are meant for anyone 18 years of age and older who has experienced sexual violence. Whether the trauma happened when you were an adult or a child, we have several counselling programs to meet your needs. Some programs focus on providing psychoeducation and helping you develop effective coping strategies while others aim to support you with healing from trauma.

Our therapy programs are offered in-person, by video or phone, with individual or group options.

Stabilization, Coping Skills, and Psychoeducation

This program prepares you for the deeper work of processing thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations triggered by experiences of sexual violence. Saffron’s Trauma Coaches help you learn about the impact of trauma and how to use coping strategies to manage symptoms and gain an understanding of how the traumatic incident has impacted you.

This program can be completed in group or individual formats. The group format is an 8-week program offered virtually.

Working through Traumatic Experiences

This program helps you process the thoughts, emotions and physical sensations connected to your experience of sexual violence. Working with a counselling intern or licensed therapist, you can access up to 20 sessions to work on your counselling goals. Talking about the trauma itself is optional – clients can work with their therapist to share their story, take pauses, or use other techniques that don’t require giving details about their experience.

These sessions may be covered by health insurance plans and are available on a sliding fee scale.

Support Person Counselling

Sexual violence impacts more than just survivors and that as a parent/guardian, spouse, partner, friend, or caregiver of someone who has experienced sexual violence, you may benefit from accessing counselling as well. Support person counselling is provided by our counselling staff who are trained in specialized services for sexual violence.

These individual sessions will provide you with a better understanding of how to support your loved one who has experienced sexual violence and equip you with emotional regulation tools to care for yourself. Clients may access up to five sessions (on a sliding scale) of support person counselling.

Periodically, we offer a version of the Foundations of Healing Group Program specifically for adult supporters.

Court Counselling Program

Preparing to testify in court can be emotionally challenging. Saffron’s Court Counselling Program offers short-term, individual, and solutions-focused navigational counselling sessions to support clients in these situations. Our team will help you identify your fears or emotional triggers around going to court, how they feel in your body, and strategies to help you remain calm and grounded through your court experience.

Court Counselling does not address the details of your experience of sexual violence or the evidence you will have to talk about in court. Instead, we focus on helping you manage the feelings you have about attending court and staying well afterward. This is a referral-based program offering 3-5 sessions for clients with an upcoming court date. Clients must be connected to the Specialized Police and Court Support program to determine their eligibility for this service. This program is offered free of charge.

Animal-Assisted Therapy

Saffron Centre offers a unique experience of animal-assisted therapy with our Facility Support Dog, Yukon. This type of therapy involves guided interactions between a trained animal and a person, helping to ground and soothe during difficult moments. Many adults find relaxation and stress relief when around animals, making this therapy a valuable addition to individual counselling sessions.
