In this half-day workshop, we define trauma (specifically sexual violence trauma) and discuss the importance of following the principles of trauma informed care.
With that foundation, we move into recognizing when someone may need help, and how to approach that conversation. We discuss active listening techniques and what is and is not appropriate to say when receiving a disclosure. Certain legal responsibilities regarding receiving a disclosure are covered.
We finish with discussing after-care and self-care techniques that can be shared with the person disclosing or practiced by those who help people who have experienced trauma.
This workshop will include interactive components on trauma-informed situations and disclosure training scenarios that will be discussed as a group.
In this half-day workshop, we start by providing parents and caregivers with basic information about safe screen time, social media platforms, and video games. We also discuss adult content that can be found online and how to talk to youth about it.
Then, we will learn about the reality of online exploitation, what to do when we encounter it and how we can help support youth experiencing it. Lastly, we define and explain digital literacy, and discuss how teaching youth to think critically about what they see online will give them the skills to understand how to stay safe on the internet.
This workshop includes a number of interactive sections on how to respond to a child who may be experiencing exploitation, and a scenario to test your digital literacy skills!
